Length 45cm MOTHER OF PEARL In antiquity, the Egyptians, Chinese and Amerindians, attributed several properties to the Mother of Pearl. This hard substance, white, with iridescent reflections, is found in shells of some mollusks in fresh and salty waters. It was thought to protect the skin and fortify the body. It was appreciated by ancient Romans and was sometimes used for the imitation of pearls. It comes in different shades of cream, pink, yellow, grey and blue-green. The shells come from inshore regions south of the Chinese Sea and from along the coastline of Annam.
