In the 1960’s athletes would wear heavy cotton or wool sweaters to keep them warm prior to their events. This was cumbersome and in some cases not easily washable (which when your sweating is not ideal). Enter a light weight material that might solve some weight issues, and it was easily cleaned.
Adidas was only making shoes during the mid 1960’s but realized this idea had potential beyond the track, this is the seed of the athleisure industry. Adi Dasler paired with a German textile manufacturer to create a leisure suit that had a zip in the front of the top to allow for easy on and off and pants that had a heel loop to keep the trousers in place for exercise. These were made in a washable wool nylon mix.
Dassler also employed German football (soccer) legend, Franz Beckenbauer to market their amazing tracksuits. Alongside marketing this amazing new tracksuit as an amazing athletic tool they presented the notion that you might like to spend your leisure time wearing such a comfortable and easy set of garments.
In 1972, Adidas presented another emblem we take for granted anymore but their trefoil logo was debuted at the 1972 Munich Olympics. It was meant to complement the three stripes as a way of identifying the superior nature of their tracksuits.
