THE INDIAN HEAD OR BUFFALO NICKEL (1913-1938) Introduced in 1913, this distinctive coin celebrated the early West with its classic profile of an American Indian on the obverse and an American Bison on the reverse. THE SILVER WARTIME JEFFERSON NICKEL (1942-1945) This special minting composed of a silver alloy, was issued from 1942-1945 in order to conserve critically short supplies of nickel, essential to the war effort. THE JEFFERSON NICKEL (1938-PRESENT) Designed by Felix Schlag (he won a prize of $1,000 for his design) this coin was introduced in 1938.
