The Hemingray Glass Company originated in 1848 as Gray & Hemingray in Cincinnati, Ohio, founded by Robert Hemingray and Ralph Gray, before incorporating under its more recognizable name in 1870. After a period in Covington, Kentucky, the company moved its primary operations to Muncie, Indiana, in 1888, becoming the world's largest manufacturer of glass insulators by 1900. It later produced other glass items, including bottles and fruit jars, before being purchased by Owens-Illinois in 1933.
