Wheelock imported blank porcelain from Bavarian factories like Jaeger & Co. In the early 1900s and commissioned American artists to hand-paint them—often to commemorate specific U.S. regions or nature themes. This transatlantic artistry gave rise to a uniquely American decorating movement called “home studio porcelain painting,” popular among upper-class women as both a hobby and a status symbol in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.
