Exceptional antique necklace made of early-generation phenolic resin (pre-Catalin Bakelite), dating from the 1920s–1930s.
This type of early phenolic material was produced in small quantities before mass Catalin production and is highly collectible.
• Material: early phenolic resin (original Bakelite / phenol-formaldehyde compound)
• Period: circa 1920–1930
• Tests:
• Simichrome test — immediate dark brown reaction, consistent with early phenolic Bakelite (pre-Catalin)
• Resistant to alcohol and acetone
• Soft warm fluorescence under UV light
• Color: genuine “Butterscotch Amber” with natural age patina
• Weight: 144 g (collectible value $10–20 per gram for early 20th-century Bakelite)
• Bead size: 24–28 mm
• Shape: barrel/cylindrical
• Condition: excellent antique condition; minor surface wear consistent with age
• Stringing: old cotton cord (restringing recommended)
A beautiful and rare example of pre-Catalin phenolic Bakelite, with the warm gloss, depth, and tone typical of 1920s–30s production.
Highly sought-after by collectors of Art Deco and phenolic jewelry.
