...jar, decorative Chinese pottery jar
A wonderful antique hexagonal Chinese pottery ginger jar, Shekwan /Shiwa jar. Hexagonal pots such as these were handmade in the late 1800´s - early 1900s to ship and store ginger, and no doubt some other pickled vegetables. Today, it can be used to store spices, as a flower vase, or simply be decorative or part of a collection. It really adds a lovely pop of colour to any interior, be it minimalist or farmhouse rustic!
This one looks to be mid - to late 1800s, judging from the colour of the unglazed bottom, and the discoloration to both the glaze and clay. It is / was a classic forest green with plant motif panel sides, about half of the green glazing turned white. The bottom is unglazed and there are no makers marks. It is in good condition with many charming irregularities due to the handmade nature of the pot, including the discoloration of the glaze and clay, where it seems the iron content of the clay started to work its way outwards.
