...Chinese pottery jar with straw netting
A pretty antique hexagonal Chinese pottery ginger jar, Shekwan /Shiwa jar. Hexagonal pots such as these were handmade in the late 1800´s - early 1900s to ship and store ginger, and no doubt some other pickled vegetables. Today, it can be used to store spices, as a flower vase, or simply be decorative or part of a collection. It really adds a lovely pop of colour to any interior, be it minimalist or farmhouse rustic!
This one looks to be ca 1910 - 1920s or earlier, judging from the colour of the unglazed bottom, and is a vibrant green-blue with plant motif panel sides. The bottom is unglazed and there are no makers marks. It is in fairly rough condition with cracks along the original mould lines around the top, and a couple cracks going down from the rim. There are also a few chips: a larger one on the rim and a few smaller ones along the crack running horizontally on the side. There are many charming irregularities due to the handmade nature of the pot. It has the original straw work cage and the original handles, and the original wood stopper. The handles have been bent flat and dried in this position. One piece of straw netting is missing on the body.
