The Hand Painted Nippon mark identifies porcelain produced in Japan for export, primarily to the United States, between 1891 and 1921.
Nippon Era:
This period began with the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, which required imported goods to be marked with their country of origin. "Nippon" is the Japanese word for Japan, and it was accepted as the country of origin mark until 1921 when the U.S. government ruled that Japanese imports must be marked "Japan".
Characteristics:
Nippon porcelain is known for its fine craftsmanship and this one features hand-painted decorations, blending European styles with traditional Japanese themes.
Collectibility:
Pieces marked "Nippon" are sought after by collectors due to their historical significance and artistic merit, with values varying based on factors like decorative elements, condition, and rarity.
Please see all pictures for exact detail of painting, use of gold and condition. Note that the cracking in the bottom seems almost as old as the piece itself and doesn’t seem to have affected the structure at all
This is a large piece.: Approx.10.5” across by Approx. 2.8” in height
Maker:
The bowl is likely from Morimura Gumi, a prominent Japanese porcelain company known for its high-quality hand-painted and gilded wares during the Nippon era.
Design:
The bowl showcases a classic Nippon aesthetic with hand-painted roses, often referred to as "Baltimore Rose" or similar floral patterns, and intricate raised gold
