A wonderful and characterful antique Toby jug depicting the famous Charles Dickens character, Sairey Gamp, from the novel Martin Chuzzlewit.
This early, unmarked jug perfectly captures her iconic likeness, from her sly, squinting expression to her floppy bonnet. The handle is cleverly formed as her signature umbrella, a key feature for identifying this beloved literary figure. While unmarked, its primitive style, muted colour palette, and earthenware body are characteristic of early Staffordshire potteries from the late 19th or early 20th century. This piece has the authentic look and feel of a genuine antique.
***IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTE:* This is a true antique over 100 years old and is being sold in AS-IS decorative/display condition. There is significant paint wear and flaking on the interior of the jug. The exterior shows general age-related wear, crazing, scuffs, and some small flea bites/chips, particularly on the hat brim and base. Please review all photos very carefully as they are an integral part of the description.
