This antique book is "The Laurel and Lyre: Fugitive Poetry of the Nineteenth Century" published by Frederick Warne & Co in 1867. It is the first edition thus. It has very decorative dark blue boards, lavishly embossed with an elaborate, ornate, gilt decoration and title on the cover and spine. The pages are gilt edged. The frontispiece is a portrait of Wordsworth. Onion skin overlaid. There are many other illustrations throughout.
Some of the authors included are: S T Coleridge, Lord Byron, Sir Walter Scott, Lady Caroline Lamb, Thomas Moore, Percy Shelley, etc.
It is in very good condition. There is wear and discoloration to the covers and spine and some bumped corners. There is loss to the tips of the corners and the bottom of the spine. There is splitting at the top of the spine. There are two inscriptions within the front end papers. The inner pages are very clean with some yellowing and the odd smudge or foxing from age. The binding is solid while the paper is split at the hinge inside the covers. Please see the photos.
This book would be ideal for your own collection or as a gift.
