A triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada from the picture album Edo Fūzoku Azuma Nishiki-e. All 3 sheets are in similar condition; The thin paper with paper pulp edging, and the colour with fading due to age of the printing, and a few creases throughout. It depicts an Edo-era scene where the lordly visitors are enjoying an indoor stage performance from a room overlooking the garden. The crest on the wallpaper represents the Ikeda clan, which is also worn by the most important man in the room. In the Edo period, several of the clan's branches were daimyō families, most notably of the Tottori Domain and Okayama Domain. Inryoji Temple was built during the reign of Ikeda Tadakatsu. Dates ca early - mid 1800s.
Utagawa Kunisada (Japanese: 歌川 国貞; 1786 – 12 January 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代 歌川 豊国, Sandai Otagawa Toyokuni), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
