A large ceramic candlestick holder by Wardle & Co* in their Farm Yard Scenes pattern, dating ca 1900-1910s aka the arts and crafts period. This one is hand painted with a running rooster and 2 little yellow chicks on the base, 1 chick on the stem, and a farmland landscape scene around the top bowl. With a generously looped holding handle, it has been made for standard sized tapered candles (25 mm across on the top) although with the larger bowl, you could use tealights or smaller pillar candles too. (up to 3 1/4 inches or 8.3 cm diameter)
Condition: with crackling to the glaze and a few discoloration spots as pictured. I did not try too hard to remove them, but it feels they sit underneath the glazing and any attempts to lighten them may damage this piece. I did not see any chips, cracks or repairs.
Size: 8 inches tall (20.5 cm)
*Manufactured by the WARDLE pottery c 1902 when Frederick Hurten Rhead was the art director, and his sister Charlotte was part of the company as well. Frederick Hurten Rhead (1880–1942) was a ceramicist and a major figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. In addition to teaching pottery techniques, Rhead was highly influential in both studio and commercial pottery. He worked for the Roseville Pottery, established his own Rhead Pottery (1913–1917), and in 1935 designed the highly successful Fiesta ware for Homer Laughlin
