Vintage Avon. Collectable 1876 Cape Cod Collection, Ruby Red Salt and Pepper set. Both with the same “5” numbered on them. The salt and pepper shakers were made in 1984 and are really only salt shakers which is why they all have the same number of holes. The topper unscrews for easy refilling.
The history
The 1876 pattern is based on an old sandwich glass pattern and inspired by the lacy delicacy of the classic Roman rosette pattern, introduced in 1975 by Wheaton Glass for Avon. Wheaton was commissioned to do the pieces, since the company was already making decorative decanters for Avon.
Avon chose to call its new dinnerware the 1876 Cape Cod Collection because it recalled the beauty of this quality glass and the spirit of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia is the area where sandwich glass originated.
This was Avon’s first venture into a dinnerware line and, because it was well received, Avon continued to make more items until the pattern was discontinued in 1993. During the next couple of years, orders still could be placed for any item still in stock, but no new pieces were made. Gradually the inventory was depleted and this collection was officially discontinued in 1995.
During the holidays, these pieces provide a perfect mix with other reds and greens.
No chips or cracks.
