While rehearsing their 2003 MTV Video Music Awards performance, Spears played a finished version of the song to Madonna & asked her to sing it with her. Madonna arranged & recorded her vocal additions on her own, making the song a duet. Spears, a Madonna fan for years said "I just asked her to do a little thing, but she really went there. She did a lot." Spears & Madonna trade lines during the verses & Madonna sings the bridge. It talks about battling the music & the pleasures of letting go on the dancefloor. A commercial success, it peaked atop the charts in Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, Spain & hit #2 in Canada, Italy, Norway & the UK. It won the Hot Dance Single of the Year at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards. The accompanying music video shows Spears & Madonna playing opposites in a nightclub. A cat & mouse chase ensues & Spears finds Madonna in the end, only for Madonna to disappear before they kiss. The song & video received rave reviews from critics, who noted it as symbolic of the sexual roles between the women.
