Vintage wool and mohair blend in excellent knittable condition, without any defects. There is a total of about 220g of yarn here. The ball band indicates a weight of 1 ounce per ball, and states that it was manufactured in Canada by Patons and Baldwin at their premises in address given as "Toronto 19". As best as I can figure, it was manufactured sometime before 1950, when the old postal zone system in Toronto was changed from a 2-digit to a 3-digit number. Our current postal code system came into effect in the 1970s. Sharp eyes will see that this originally sold at Eaton's for $0.79 per ball. That's the equivalent of $10.50 in today's money! There are 3 balls still with their ball band, one ball without a band, and several smaller balls and skeins. I skeined up this wool, when I inherited this from my mother. Given that this is pure wool and mohair, made before Superwash and other treatments were invented, I thought it would take up dye really well, and I converted several balls into skeins to prepare them for dyeing. I discarded the ball bands in the process. I later abandoned the dyeing experiment, and the yarn has sat in my stash for about 10 years. I weighed the yarn, but I don't know the yardage. The ball band indicates that it is suitable for big needles, so I would be inclined to swatch it on a 6mm needle to start. It is not as soft or fuzzy as modern mohair, but is not scratchy. The boucle texture and wool content should provide a lovely cushiony fabric.

dmeather Do you think it would take dye okay?

scrumble49 @dmeather Yes, I am sure it would, although the mohair and the wool might take up the dye a bit differently. That was part of my expectation for my dyeing experiment, but I saw a squirrel and got distracted 😒😜🤪
