This album is famous because it is NOT Vangelis's original synthesizer-based soundtrack from the film.
Why the Adaptation? Due to complex legal and licensing issues in 1982, Vangelis's original electronic score could not be released as a soundtrack album. To capitalize on the film's release, the studio commissioned The New American Orchestra to perform a heavily arranged, jazz-funk and orchestral interpretation of Vangelis's main themes.
The New American Orchestra's version is much more traditional, brass-heavy, and "Hollywood-sounding" than Vangelis's dark, ambient, synth-heavy score that defined the film's atmosphere. The official, original Vangelis score was famously not released until 1994, over a decade after the film came out, making the 1982 New American Orchestra version the only widely available album for a long time.
