The Protagonist: Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is an endearingly imperfect, single 30-something woman living in London. She constantly worries about her weight, consumption of cigarettes and alcohol, and her lack of a stable love life.
The Resolution: As a New Year's resolution, Bridget decides to take control of her life by starting a diary to chronicle her journey of self-improvement (losing weight, quitting vices, and finding Mr. Right).
The Love Triangle: Her romantic life quickly becomes complicated as she finds herself caught between two very different men:
Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), her charming, womanizing boss.
Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), a handsome, but initially rude and "stuffy" human rights barrister who is a family acquaintance.
The Conflict: As Bridget navigates a passionate but ultimately tumultuous affair with the "too good to be true" Daniel, she keeps running into the disagreeable Mark. A long-standing feud between the two men (involving a past betrayal) further complicates her choices.
The Theme: The film follows Bridget's hilarious and relatable struggle to find happiness, not by conforming to societal expectations, but by finally realizing that she is perfect "just as she is."
