Maybe a one-of-a-kind piece. Definitely a museum worthy garment. This jacket dates from the late 1950s to the late 1960s, based on the colour and shape of the Chanel label. Chanel started making jackets in 1954, as production across France ramped up after WWII. Coco Chanel’s “comeback collection” featured what became known as the “classic Chanel jacket” — a collarless, boxy tweed jacket with braided trim, and a delicate chain sewn on to the hem to ensure perfect drape. The comfort, simplicity and elegant style was revolutionary at the time, when the “New Look” was structured, corseted silhouettes of Christian Dior.
The exterior of the jacket is practically in perfect conditions. The interior, pale pink silk lining, shows sign of age and wear, with some tears at the seams of both armpits and near the bottom of the jacket on one side. This can be restored by a master seamstress. However, it is suggested you consult an expert before restoring it, as restoring could reduce its value.
Wear it, frame it, gift it to a museum — regardless, this jacket represents the earliest generation of what would become one of Chanel’s most iconic pieces.
