Canadian artist handmade + signed wooden vase, decorative Spalted Manitoba Maple

A hand turned narrow necked bulbous vase, made from joined pieces of Spalted Manitoba Maple. Signed underneath HERM (Herm Stolte). With some marks and small dents / chips. Size: ca 6 inches tall, 6.5 inches diameter. "Herm is a craftsman who has spent decades honing his technique and artistic eye working exclusively with wood. He’s based in Calgary, Alberta (Canada) and loves celebrating local varieties of wood in his work. The dry prairie climate grows few hardwoods of great renown but shrubs such as Caragana (Caragana arborescens), Silver Buffaloberry (Shepherdia argenta), Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) and Honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica) all produce wonderful wood if an artist is able to work with smaller pieces. Pens and other turnings are thus ideal for showing off this great material. Many of Herm’s larger bowls are also from such “found” wood. He’s constantly on the lookout for old apple trees and maples scheduled for a date with the chainsaw. His work gives them new life and each hardship the tree suffered in life, each burl and beetle-mark, becomes a mark of beauty."
