Juan Luis Quispe of Peru creates this sterling silver necklace with his interpretation of the Andean Trilogy. The principal shape is the chakana, or "Inca Cross," which is full of symbolism. The four arms of the cross represent the cardinal directions on a compass. Centered on the cross is a square, representing two of the three levels of existence: the upper world of the gods and the world of our everyday existence. The circle in the center is the passage by which a spiritual leader can move among those two worlds and the third, the spirit underworld of ancestors and other deities. Across the chakana flies a condor, the sky messenger of the gods, and climbing up the steps of the cross is a puma, the symbol of strength, wisdom, and the connectedness of living people to the earth.
