A complete edition in the original Latin of Caesar's famous military commentaries on the Gallic Wars, along with additional works by Aulus Hirtius and other authors covering Caesar's later campaigns in Alexandria, Africa, and Spain. It was published by the renowned Tauchnitz publishing house in Leipzig in 1829 (!).
From crossing the Rhine to invading Britain, Caesar documents his military campaigns with tactical precision and political acumen. More than just a war memoir, these commentaries reveal the mind of history's greatest general as he faces fierce Celtic warriors, navigates treacherous alliances, and crushes the great rebellion led by Vercingetorix.
Caesar's clear, direct, third-person narrative creates an illusion of objectivity while subtly justifying his actions to Roman audiences. Essential reading for understanding Roman imperialism, military strategy, and the man who would become dictator. A masterpiece of Latin literature that influenced military writing for centuries, and still a mainstay of Latin instruction.
- Commentarii de Bello Gallico Et Civili [aka The Gallic War]- Caesar
Published 1829, Carl Tauchnitz, Leipzig
Hardcover. Approx. 4x5in. 544pp. Let's be candid about the condition: This book is... intact. It's nearly 200 years old, and has been around the block. Battered and worn, heavy wear on edges. Pages are age-yellowed, and there is heavy, heavy foxing (those brown spots). But -- 200 years!! Last photo with soup can for relative size.
