Carnival glass originated as an inexpensive substitute for the hand-made favrile glass in fashion in the early 1900’s. To produce the iridescent finish, machine-made glass was coated with various mineral compounds and then re-fired. The tern carnival glass came into use later in the depression of the 1930’s, when many companies liquidated their inventory by selling it cheaply to the travelling carnival and circuses to be used as prizes.
This lovely example is a Fenton ‘Dragon & Lotus’ bowl, c. 1915, a little over 8 ½ inches in diameter, with a small pad foot. It shows a lovely heavy marigold iridescence over clear glass.
It is in excellent condition, without cracks, chips, scratches, or any other damage or defect.
Exceptional!
