Daphne Odjig Indigenous Art Christmas Greeting Cards Featuring "Nanabush and the Spirit of Winter" - Set of 10 Cards and Envelopes - New Unused
From Odawa Indian Artist Daphne Odjig, this is a set of 10 Season's Greetings cards and envelopes featuring copies of her original "Nanabush and the Spirit of Winter" painting. They are printed on sturdy card stock and measure 7.25 x 5.5. They are single fold and in perfect condition. Great to frame.
Many years ago, the "Sprit of Winter" had the earth within his wintery grasp, covering it with ice and snow. One day, the great Indian spirit "Nanabush" tricked the "Spirit of Winter" into eating a bowl of hot wild rice, causing the Winter Maker to melt into the warmth of Spring and Summer. As time passed and fall approached, the Spirit of Winter lost his appetite, refused to eat, and once again the earth became very cold. Spring would only come again then Nanabush performed his trickery. The seasons of our earth were thus created.
Canadian artist Daphne Odjig is a descendant of the Potawatomi tribe, which is part of the Great Lakes Tree Fires tribal circle. Inspired by Cornelius Kreighoff, early Daphne Odjig paintings were natural landscapes of Canada. Later, during the 1950s, she viewed a series of abstract and cubist paintings at the Royal Ontario Museum and gained an interest in the techniques of Pablo Picasso.
