Delft Blue Ceramic Tobacco "Toeback" Jar with Brass Lid by Royal Goedewaagen

In very good vintage condition This is a piece of Dutch Delftware, (earthenware) tobacco jar or "Toeback" jar manufactured by the Royal Goedewaagen ceramics company. The motifs are in "Delft Blue". The number 1423 is on the bottom and is either the pattern number or production number. These jars were historically used to store leaf tobacco and herbs, especially in colonial Virginia during the 17th and 18th centuries, and were an important part of the tobacco trade in the Netherlands The original brass lid has areas where it is tarnished There is no scent on the interior of this jar.
