"Every minute you are with your dog, you are training him. By your every action and attitude, you are teaching him to be affectionate or reserved, courageous or timid, responsive or withdrawn, obedient or disobedient. It is something you cannot escape, even if you should want to, for once a puppy leaves his mother and litter-mates his attitude toward the world will be learned only from you.
If he learns from his first contacts with you, and from all his future contacts, that he is loved and respected, that he has a definite place in the family and that certain things are expected of him, he can be what you have always wanted in a dog, and perhaps even more. It is to this ideal that we have dedicated this book. You cannot spend all your time on obedience training of your dog, but in your training sessions can be established a man-to-dog rapport that is very nearly impossible otherwise.
In training, if it is done with kindness and love and respect, your dog will learn to respond to you in a marvelous degree. At the same time, you will learn how to treat him outside of training. He will in addition become obedient, and his obedience to your commands will again color your attitude, making for a relationship that is more than man and pet—it becomes truly man and companion..."
