“Let us describe life in the homes in the early days, when families would have to chop wood, haul water and build a fire before they could eat or bathe or even have clean clothes.
The kitchen was the family room, for here practically every activity occurred - cooking, eating, washing, ironing, sewing, and also used for a shoe repair shop. The big black range with its plump arched feet, nickle plated scrolls and curlicues, cooked the meals, baked the bread in the large oven and heated the room as well as the flat irons with which clothes were ironed. It also heated the water for home use - either on top of the stove or in a reservoir.”
