Edward VIII “GR 1937” Coronation Mug
This mug is confirmed to commemorate the intended 1937 coronation of King Edward VIII. The “GR” cipher (for Georgius Rex, used out of tradition despite his name being Edward) and date “1937” reflect the planned coronation that was canceled following Edward’s abdication in December 1936.
Items bearing Edward VIII’s coronation insignia are rarer than those for other monarchs due to the abrupt end of his reign.
Many pieces were destroyed or repurposed after the abdication.
The base includes a hand-incised signature of potter.
The orange-red glaze and hand-carved detailing add to its uniqueness and suggest it is not mass-produced.
Redware or earthenware, with incised crown and lettering.
Edward VIII association, hand-thrown construction, and limited production rarity inform its value.
Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repairs, minor rough texture commiserate of age.
