Edwardus Rex VIII, 1936 Embossed Crowned Cipher Cornishware Glazed Red-Ware Mug.
Commemorative Mug for Edward VIII, 1936 produced to commemorate the short reign of King Edward VIII, who abdicated in December 1936 after less than a year on the throne.
The embossed crowned cipher “E. VIII R” (Edwardus Rex VIII) and the date “1936” mark this as one of a limited number of commemorative items made in the months before his abdication.
The base is incised with what is a studio artist or potter’s signature, and the glaze is a rich, mottled reddish-orange polychrome.
The production and sale of Edward VIII memorabilia were quickly curtailed, making surviving examples from reputable potteries especially collectible.
Brown-red glazed ceramic mug with tapered sides
Embossed with crown and monogram “E. VIII R 1936”
Incised underside, possibly with artist/decorator signature
Pottery type: redware, hand-finished
Glaze: translucent polychrome with mottled surface effect
Very good, minor wear consistent with age.
Rare.
Well-preserved, with the glaze intact and no visible chips, minor rough edge.
Items bearing the cipher of Edward VIII represent a pivotal moment in British royal history—the only 20th-century monarch to abdicate.
T.G. Green & Co. Ltd, value is due to both scarcity and the collectible status of Cornishware.
