🖋️ Background on “Art of Chokin”
“Chokin” (彫金) is an ancient Japanese art form originally used to decorate samurai swords, armor, and temples using gilded etching on metal surfaces (usually copper).
In the 20th century, companies like Westland Co. and Kato Kogei began producing decorative plates and vases with Chokin-style inserts for export—especially to North America.
These pieces were marketed as luxury décor items, often sold in gift shops or through catalogs in the 1980s–1990s.
