About the artist: Ernst Würtenberger studied from 1888 to 1892 at the Munich Art Academy with Johann Caspar Herterich and Wilhelm von Diez . In 1892 he got to know works by Arnold Böcklin on a trip to Zurich , whereupon he went to Florence to study with Böcklin in the winter of 1894/95 . From 1896 to 1897 he was a master student of Ferdinand Keller at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . From 1898 he ran his own studio in Munich. In 1899 he met the Black Forest painter Hans Thoma , whose style can also be demonstrated in Würtenberger's work. After his marriage, he first moved to Konstanz , then to Zurich in 1902 , where he had painted around 200 portraits of Zurich personalities as a portrait painter by 1921. The works of Ferdinand Hodler , which he got to know there, then had a strong influence on him. From 1902 he taught at the Zurich Luise Stadler School (women's art school).
