Exceptional Large 33.5" Vintage Wayang Golek puppet, Green face demon deity

...Indonesian Sudanese traditional theatre puppet A beautifully hand carved and painted wooden rod puppet, as traditionally used in Indonesian / West Javanese puppet theatre. Dressed in patterned batik fabric with hand embroidered bullion thread decoration, this doll is in nice vintage condition with signs of age and use. The pigments used for the body and face are still strong and it has good detailing in both carving and painting. The central rod is removable from the head - this one has to be a replacement as it´s too long for this puppet, and it feels a little stiff to move. There are no markings on the body to indicate a characters within the plays. His green face and bulging red eyes are both terrifying and beautiful, and the headdress looks to be princely - and is that a bird at the front? He wears a collar of a black snake and red and green armbands. The velvet waistband and loincloth looks worn and old. The batik cotton fabric skirt with some staining, fading and a numerous small holes. The shoulder threads looks a little loose. (this can be repaired fairly easily) but on the other hand they allow for good movement in the arms. One hand spike (dagger? Nail? claw?) Looks broken and glued (pictured). The base of the head with some signs of wear, including a rough edge at the front and a crack line (pictured) Dates ca 1950s - 1970s Size: including the rod he is quite large at 85 cm tall.
