Published by Avon books in 1994 this scholarly read is a page turner. The book is still relevant today and helpful for providing context when coming across news, blogs and SM posts. Besides company history, the design of the dolls and the evolution of Barbie, the book covers Barbie collectors and some of the social issues such as the objectification of women, the lack of representation of other ethnicities and cultures. Or in cases where they have covered groups like Native Americans, it's been from an outsiders perspective. On the back cover, left hand corner it states "Women's Studies, Popular Culture, Sociology" and these tags are worth noting if you are interested in buying this book.
