Founding Horses The working horses and their people in Canada’s past by Andrew F. Fraser Softcover 1991
This is an account of the breeds of work-horses, their backgrounds, their eras and their people in the cultivating and the making of Canada. Included here are histories of the several types of horses which were used in the foundation of this country. From Atlantic coastal patches to mainland farms and prairies, Clydes-dales, Percherons, Belgians, with Newfoundland ponies, cow-ponies, "Canadian" horses-and others-were pioneers. These horses worked alike in the early days of traditional farming, from
"The Rock" to "The Rockies." Horses were essential in the settlement of Newfoundland, Lower and Upper Canada and the West, and the birth and progress of Confederation owes much to them. Their heyday ended across the width of a cultivated Canada in the aftermath of World War II, but they left a proud history of massive achievement in the agricultural wholeness of the nation.
