denim_patent @alhopki Yes, I think we have spoken about this - the PNW connection!! This was taken in Woodburn. Every year (aside from this one 😢) they host a big Tulip Festival! Woodburn is South of Portland about a 30 min drive! Ive done a little bouldering just inside at a gym and was surprised how much I liked it. Does he compete?

atticchic @denim_patent It took me about 30+ years to find that passion again but seems like I have reignited that passion. I especially love the meditative aspect of swimming now which was never the case when I was younger. I had a coach who would always tell me that I could make the Olympic Trials but not the Olympics because I thought to much. Never understood what he meant until now.

I have started to get into cycling again and have experienced this prior (not now need to work up to that!!) as well as longer distance running (harder for me to get back into after 20 years logging the miles in the pool!).

I decided to do a 5k open water swim for a fundraiser (swim for a mission) benefitting service personnel. Thought it would be a good idea

denim_patent @atticchic I actually got back into swimming when I was in my mid 20s. Long story short I competed at Masters Nats and found that pure joy of swimming for myself, racing 50s of stroke (um, why did that ever go away?) and really enjoying it. That led to swimming again full time and I represented the USA in Rio!!! So thats why I never want to label anyone - whether their goals are State or doing their first legal 100 fly...believe in people!!

Did you swim on the team there? That was my dream school that I really wanted to go to but unfortunately life got in the way for me.

denim_patent @atticchic Yeah, I think the challenging part is the frontal cortex is not fully developed at that age so...how do you know what is limiting you when you are only 12, 15 etc? It becomes a mind game!

atticchic @denim_patent I can't tell you how much I miss the pool as I loved that time to just be in that moment in the water not thinking about anything else but maybe some stroke techniques..... seems like you understand very well what I'm talking about. I was a sprinter when I was younger didn't care much for long distance but now that I'm older I actually like the distance swims that the open water especially provides.

I really enjoy watching the masters competitions as wow! Really great stuff going on there! I think for myself I needed to be in the place I'm at in my life right now to have been able to find that joy again as for me I lost it I think as the pressure became to much for me to handle.

And true it really is a mind game as at that age 14 15 16 years old the brain is still developing as well as the body! (though I was pretty fully developed physically by the time I was 12 years old! lol Don't think I grew much from that age on but emotionally, mentally was far off from developing fully.

Sure is a lot of hard work and lots to learn!! (thank god for youtube videos!! lol) So yes I grew up here in Dover, NH and swam for the team here, Seacoast Swim Asociation. I actually swam with Jenny Thompson (though she's a bit younger) She broke all my records!! lol
