The Artist: Giuseppe Armani (1935-2006)
Giuseppe Armani was a highly celebrated Italian sculptor known for his work with a company called Florence Sculture d'Arte in Tuscany. While his works are often referred to as "Capodimonte" porcelain, it's important to understand the distinction:
Giuseppe Armani's Work: Armani's figurines were created for Florence Sculture d'Arte, which produced them using a type of cold-cast porcelain or a similar composite material. His pieces are recognized for their incredible attention to realistic detail and fluid, lifelike poses. He created a vast range of subjects, from elegant ladies and classical figures to animals and, as in your case, religious sculptures.
Capodimonte History: "Capodimonte" refers to a specific type of Italian porcelain that was originally produced in the Royal Factory of Capodimonte in Naples, starting in 1743. The original Capodimonte porcelain has a specific mark (a crowned 'N') and a distinctive soft-paste body. Today, the term "Capodimonte" is often used more broadly to describe a style of Italian porcelain figurine, and many modern companies use the name. While Armani's pieces are in the style of Capodimonte, they were not produced in the original factory.
