This charming mug and saucer is part of the Shakespeare's sonnet collection from Kensington, England. They were made in the 1960s for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare, and their design and pattern are reminiscent of 19th century tableware.
The cup depicts Anne Hathaway Cottage, where Shakespeare's wife lived as a child. A small relief pattern and curls are drawn along the edge of the mug. The handle also has an unusual but comfortable shape.
The saucer is decorated with a similar pattern along the edge and in the center. There is a recess in the center of the mug that holds the mug well when carried. On the back of the saucer you can read the stanza of the sixth sonnet: "As it fell upon a day in the merry month of may."
This set is made of ironstone, clay and feldspar ceramic mass.
Mug measures approx 3" (7.5 cm) high, 3" (7.5 cm) diameter, 8 oz (250 ml) capacity. Saucer diameter 6" (15.5 cm).
Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or scratches. The only drawback is the small stains from the paint obtained during production.
