Chinese Carved Lavender Jade Phoenix Vessel Fenghuang.
Mid-20th century (1950s–1980s)
Carved Phoenix jade animal-form vessels have long been prized in Chinese art history, drawing inspiration from archaic bronzes and Han Dynasty cosmology.
The Fenghuang, the auspicious Chinese Phoenix is an immortal bird whose rare appearance is said to be an omen foretelling harmony at the ascent to the throne of a new emperor.
The fenghuang is often considered to signify both male and female elements, a yin-yang harmony; its name is a combination of the words feng representing the male aspect and huang the female.
It is mentioned as early as the Shang dynasty in oracle-bone inscriptions.
During the Zhou dynasty it acquired its association with political prosperity, harmony, virtue, duty, ritual, compassion, and trust.
This gorgeous figure reflects ancient motifs, its tooling, polish, and coloration suggest more recent 20th-century production—likely intended for decorative display or as a scholar's object, not ritual use.
Raised on four stylized legs, with curled tail, large claws, and expressive head featuring stylized mane
Decorated with low-relief archaic scrolls and cloud motifs throughout.
Material displays mottled pale-to-medium lavender tones with some white/gray veining, slight translucency, and reflective polish.
Gorgeous, auspicious, lavender Jade Phoenix.
Pristine condition.
