Since the end of the 17th century, the "Day of the Girls (hina matsuri)" festival has been celebrated on March 3, also known as the "peach festival", the flowering of peaches being representative of the feminine qualities of grace and of kindness.
Japanese little girls exhibit refined dolls posed on small platforms with five levels covered with a carpet of red felt. These special dolls, which are sometimes passed down from generation to generation, are put away for the rest of the year. Wealthy families included accessories, palanquins and imperial chariots.
