Unlike applied tile mosaics, Gerbino’s method involved carefully marbling and cutting colored clays, reassembling them into intricate geometric patterns, and then fusing them together during firing. The result is a smooth surface with a striking patchwork of terracotta, cream, and marbled swirls, accented by a decorative central band with floral medallions. Jean Gerbino (1876–1961) was a master potter of Vallauris, celebrated for this pioneering technique.
