This elegant 12.5-inch vase was created by Jean Gerbino for Vallauris, France, using his celebrated pâte de mosaïque (mosaic clay) technique. Unlike applied tile mosaics, Gerbino’s method involved carefully marbling and cutting colored clays, reassembling them into intricate geometric patterns, and then fusing them together during firing. The result is a smooth surface with a striking patchwork of terracotta, cream, and marbled swirls, accented by a decorative central band with floral medallions.
Jean Gerbino (1876–1961) was a master potter of Vallauris, celebrated for this pioneering technique. His works are held in private and museum collections worldwide and are highly sought after on the collector’s market. This vase is not only a beautiful decorative object but also a valuable investment piece in French mid-century ceramics.
