Unique Aspects: Embroidered initials "SJM" on the inside. Emrboidery of fur coats was very popular during that time, reflective of personalization and status. Fur coats were luxury items, often custom-made. Adding initials signaled ownership and exclusivity, similar to monogramming on leather goods today.
It was a subtle way to showcase wealth and sophistication.

Brand and Provenance: John McKay Ltd. was a manufacturing furrier based at 149–155 Brock Street, Kingston. It operated a fur factory there and also had a retail shop on Princess Street and a warehouse near the railway tracks. This made it one of Kingston’s most prominent fur businesses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Archival records from Queen’s University show architectural drawings for proposed additions to the fur store around 1900, confirming its presence as a significant commercial building in Kingston at that time.
Active Period: The company was thriving in the early 1900s, with ads and architectural plans for expansions around 1900–1926.
