...Gregorian chant Music, Roman Catholic handwritten Vellum
A large medieval ca 1450s Century song sheet (15th Century), hand written on Vellum originally from a monastery choir book. The page has been illuminated with a Romanic Initial Capital on the front of the page, and a Celtic style Capital on the reverse. It has been coloured with cinnabar in red and Iron Gall Ink for the black notes and wording.
The text (and music) is the "Statuit ei Dominus" an Introit for the Feast of St. Nicholas, one of five antiphons used in the Latin Eucharist. Statuit ei Dominus is an introit for a martyr, pope or bishop. It is in Old Roman Chant, a predecessor to Gregorian chant.
(front) Statuit ei Dominus testamentum pacis
et principem fecit eum ut sit
(reverse) illi sacerdotii dignitas in aeternum.
Memento Domine David et Ónis....
There are little thread holes on the edge and it it certain that this was once a page in a (large) book. The page has been used on both sides, it is numbered 7 on the front of page in Latin numbering.
Condition: There is some age-related warping of the material. On the reverse of the page (with the capital M) is a faint line over the top of the page, where some adhesive material was carefully removed. There is some slight running of the ink to some letters, like the page may have gotten wet or moist at some point.
Overall it is in great shape for being almost 600 years old
Size: 20 x 26-3/8" (ca 51.5 x 67 cm)
