The Canadian province of Alberta began issuing license plates in 1912. In 1964, Alberta changed its license plate format to a six-digit series with dashes, such as "AB-12-34". The province name "ALBERTA" and the year "1964" were positioned at the bottom of the plate and would alternate between the left and right sides in subsequent years.
