Dress You Up is a drum beat driven dance track featuring guitars & choir vocals. The lyrics are an extended metaphor for fashion & lust, comparing dressing up with passion. It was her 6th consecutive Top 5 single in the USA & hit the Top 10 in Canada & the UK. In '85, the song was included on the Parents Music Resource Center's "Filthy Fifteen" list for the content of its lyrics. Founder Tipper Gore heard her daughter listening to it, considered the line "Gonna dress you up in my love" as exemplifying 'vulgar music' & called upon the RIAA to give parents a consumer-friendly means of identifying records unsuitable for minors - a rating system based on lyrical content. Gore stated: "Pop culture is morally bankrupt, flagrantly licentious & utterly materialistic - & Madonna is the worst of all." Fans responded with "If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Stop trying to police our morality!" The campaign however, was successful & led to the creation of the Parental Advisory sticker & Dress You Up given a rating of 'S' for "sex & obscenity".
Shoo-Bee-Doo is an homage to Motown music. It is in the doo-wop genre & resembles songs of early '60s girl groups. The lyrics discuss relationship problems & are phrased as clichés in the coda.
