‘An Aztec calendar figurine, called the Aztec Sun Stone or Piedra del Sol, represents the Aztec concept of time, cosmology, and the cyclical nature of existence, detailing their understanding of the universe and their place within it. The central figure is often interpreted as the Sun God, Tonatiuh, surrounded by symbols of past cosmic eras, the gods, and elements of their sophisticated calendar system, which tracked sacred time and cosmic cycles.

The Sun God:
The central image of the stone is believed to be Tonatiuh, a powerful deity who brought forth the current era and who was central to Aztec cosmology
Timekeeping:
The surrounding carvings depict symbols of the 20 day-signs that formed a key part of the Aztec 260-day sacred calendar, demonstrating their advanced understanding of astronomical and calendrical systems’
