"The purpose of this monograph is to introduce the technics of tying surgical knots to the new student of the Art and Science of Surgery.
Tying knots is a most basic and elementary part of any surgical procedure. A life-saving simple appendectomy may require 40 to 60 completed knots; an extensive radical neck dissection for cancer may use 220 to 250 knots. Although tying good knots is simple and elementary, the surgeon must do it properly and efficiently, for poorly tied knots can lead to post-operative complications or even death. It demands deftness and manipulatory skill. You must practice with your hands, and practice for a long time to acquire the trained hands of a skilled surgeon.
Surgical knots must be tied with the technic proper for the tissues to which the sutures or ligatures are affixed, and only 'tight enough' to serve their purpose."
