Oh my goodness, when my hubby and I were both stationed at Great Lakes, we had part-time jobs with a small valet company parking cars for private parties and events in Chicago. One New Year's Eve we worked at a house party in Hoffman Estates! Gosh, what a beautiful neighborhood that is! We loved that whole area, especially Chicago. ☺️

chicknthesticks @yousocrazy1 Please thank your dad and your daughter for their service! My last command before I retired was in Norfolk, I worked for the submarine community. I feel for your daughter- it's tough being stationed on a ship for your first tour. She'll live through it, and make lifelong friends. If she works hard, she can earn her Surface Warfare pin, and even her air warfare. Each of those are worth a mint when she takes her test for advancement!

chicknthesticks @yousocrazy1 It's crazy how much I miss the Navy. I don't think I ever had a more fun job, and I got to see places other people just dream about. Your daughter will get to visit France, England, and Italy! I knew when I enlisted that I was going to stay 20 years, and I'm so thankful I did. Now we have free medical care for life, and my husband's retirement check pays the mortgage (mine pays for my horses). The hard work was all worth it.

chicknthesticks @yousocrazy1 Aww, that's rough. A positive attitude is so important. She's going to go through some really crappy periods but they will help her appreciate the really fun periods, like steel beach parties and shore visits. Encourage her to get off the ship as often as possible, and hook up with the group that schedules tours in the foreign countries. Go ashore with friends and hang with the locals. Visit churches and shops and restaurants, and take lots of pictures!
