We know them as flip-flops but in Japan they are called "zori" and are the essential footwear for kimono, whether casual or formal. Handmade by a workshop in Tokyo's Sumida ward using techniques like those used in making the waraji straw sandals of the samurai. Because this is the 21st century, though, instead of straw, these flip-flops are made with a 50% cotton, 50% polyester knitting yarn. The resulting footwear is very comfortable and perfect for resting your feet after a hard day's work. You can untie and retie strap to make them as snug or loose as you like!
