Symposium is a philosophical work by Plato, written in the 4th Century BC. The text is composed as the dialogue between a number of important Greek figures attending a banquet. The figures include Socrates, Alcibiades and Aristophanes. The subject of the discussion is the nature of the god of love and desire, Eros. Translated into English, Eros, means ‘love’. The host of the party, Agathon, a tragedian in Athens, challenges each of the guests to deliver a speech in praise of Eros. The Symposium is one of Plato’s most appreciated works, it is praised for its philosophical arguments and contribution to literature.
