SAVE THE ELEPHANTS?
They don't seem to have much in common. One weighs a mere few ounces, while the other tips the scale at several tons. One comes from a plant, the other is an animal. One can be found in South America, the other in Africa. Nonetheless, the small corozo nut (called tagua in Spanish) could save the elephant from poachers who ruthlessly hunt it down for its ivory.
The tagua is the fruit of a palm tree found mainly in the northern part of South America. Each fruit contains four to nine seeds, which are similar in size and shape to an egg. Initially, the seed cavities are filled with a thirst-quenching liquid that looks like coconut milk. The liquid then solidifies into a sweet and edible gelatin. Finally, the gelatin turns into a hard white substance that can easily be mistaken for real ivory. The resemblance is such that artisans often leave a bit of brown pericarp on their pieces to prove that they are not, in fact, elephant ivory.
As a substitute for ivory, tagua is indeed the elephants friend.
So if your dreams are made of ivory, forget about the African savannah and discover Esmeralda, our unique collection of jewelry.
